FAQs
On the following tabs I aim to provide more detailed answers to general questions that I'm frequently asked.
Text in blue can be clicked for more details.
For more information, or if you've questions or concerns that I've not covered here or on this website, you're welcome to email them to me. I'd be pleased to hear from you, and I'll reply as soon as possible and (of course) with no obligation.
To enjoy a full holiday experience at Chalet 28 and on the Isle of Wight, it's not essential to have a car - there's so much to see and do at the chalet, and close by within short walking distance, that you may choose not to venture out & about.
That said, if at any time you choose or need to go further afield, using the Island's excellent bus service would be the best and most cost-effective way to do it – it participates in the national "£3 per person/ride" scheme, various National Concessionary Passes, and unlimited travel tickets.
Stops for the hourly #8 are just outside the SBHC entrance - this is on the Newport-Sandown-Ryde route, and connects with most other routes that cover the whole Island.
If you would be taking your car, there's plenty of free and safe parking space close to the chalet. Nearby are several fuel and battery recharging stations, even if you don't ever have to call at them – considering that 20 miles is the furthest distance you can drive away from Chalet 28, it's likely that just one full tank/battery would be enough for a whole week of touring around the Isle of Wight!
Part of your holiday travel will be the Solent sea crossing, and taking your car wouldn't be cheap, but bear in mind that it's the gateway to a holiday destination unlike anywhere else in the UK - a small (25 mile wide) Island crammed full of places to visit and things to do - meaning you wouldn't have to spend a fortune on fuel, nor endure hours of tedious driving that will waste so much precious holiday time!
By way of Discounts and bookings advice, I'd be pleased to help you minimise the price of your ferry crossings
Across the entire Island's 140 square miles of mixed terrains, there's 36 designated footpaths and cycleways - some along near-level former railway trackbeds through to more challenging hilly routes, Chalet 28 is probably at the best location on the Isle of Wight to access the majority of them!
WALKERS: The 22 walking routes, varying from 1 to 16 miles, totalling 150 miles. Several walks linking up to form a 65 mile route around the entire coast – this coastal footpath passes right by Chalet 28
CYCLISTS: The 14 cycling routes, varying from 1 to 65 miles, totalling 300 miles. The 32 mile Red Squirrel Trail passes within a couple of miles from Chalet 28 – most of it is along near-level former railway single trackbeds passing through rural villages and landscapes, so is particularly suited to family cycling.
Chalet 28 is part of a holiday CENTRE, where the emphasis is on quality time together in a peaceful setting that's both in the countryside and beside the sea. It's not a holiday CAMP where you'd be contending with the usual congestion, noise (particularly in the evenings) and other general distractions.
The Chalet is well equipped to meet the usual day-to-day needs and demands for children of all ages, including the unlimited broadband and two Smart Tvs for when kids (or maybe parents!) need some quieter down-time.
Close by and within easy walking or short driving distance, for children of all ages there's plenty to see and do (at little or no cost) even if only playing on the sand, in the sea, or at the playparks
Further afield, mostly within 7 miles, are many venues that would appeal to kids of all ages ranging from animals and playzones for the youngest through to theme and actvity parks for the tweenies (5-12 year olds) and teens. For the youngest and tweenies in particular, many of these venues are indoor or under cover.
With teenagers in mind, beyond family outings, there's plenty of scope for them to "do their own thing" - surfing, paddle boarding, bike hire, horse riding, go-karting, tree climbing, escape rooms, retro video gaming ...
When I originally bought Chalet 28, I did so with the specific needs of my wife in mind - her general declining health and difficulty moving around other than with wheelchair assistance. What we needed was somewhere that was in a quiet location (and with reasonable privacy), accessable (with near-level access from close-by parking), and reasonably spacious (for moving around inside with walking aids) – this chalet ticked all the boxes!
To even better suit her needs and wishes, I went on to carry out many further improvements (particularly to the bathroom) as and when she requested, and many of which revolved around safe sitting and standing coupled with creating a "homely" feel for her to enjoy. Sadly she's since passed on, but her lagacy has since continued to be enjoyed by similarly less-able guests
Nearby, the 1/2 mile long seafront promenade is ideal for guests using mobility aids such as wheelchairs or mobility scooters – it's level, flat surfaced, and wide with many bench seats; refrehment kiosks and toilets; free roadside and car park blue badge parking
Generally, the Isle of Wight is very dog-friendly, as is Chalet 28 and close by.
Whether as "family members" or "companions" well behaved dogs with responsible owners are always welcome. At at no extra charge you'd be more than welcome to bring 1, 2, or even 3 (depending on their sizes / breeds / temperaments) provided that you tell me beforehand, and that the reasonable and fair SHBC Site and Chalet 28 “Dog Rules” are complied with.
